Pedals for Pencils
Fundraiser:
Help Us Fund School Supplies
Pedals for Pencils was founded by Grace and Kate, two first-year public school teachers in Tennessee. They met during their first year in the classroom and quickly found common ground in their students, their shared frustrations, and their stubborn hope that public education can still be a force for good. In April 2025, the Tennessee State Senate passed SB0836—a bill that would allow schools to deny undocumented children access to public education. In response, the two teachers launched Pedals for Pencils: a grassroots fundraising and advocacy effort to equip classrooms serving migrant students and defend every child’s right to a public education.
This summer, Grace (a Vermont native) and Kate will be biking over 300 miles through Vermont with the goal of raising $10,000. The funds will support Title 1 classrooms that serve migrant students as well as organizations in Tennessee like TIRRC and La Paz Chattanooga that advocate for immigrant families and educational equity across the state. Pedals for Pencils is a ride for students, for teachers, and for the future of public education.
